Police Force collects 465m/- from traffic offenders in 5 days



POLICE in Dar es Salaam Special Zone, through the traffic unit, has collected 464,790,000/- from fines spanning over 15,493 traffic offences in five days.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Simon Sirro, said the money was collected from September 27 to October 2 in various areas in the city as the country was marking the Road Safety Week.

According to him, the 14,006 seized vehicles include 1,487 motorcycles, 4,765 commuter buses and 9,241 private cars and lorries. “There are some of motorcyclists, who have already appeared in court for not wearing helmets and carrying more than one passenger,” he told reporters.
The zonal police chief observed that road safety was still a serious problem in the country and urged all road users not to ignore road safety regulations to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, Mr Sirro said police are holding for interrogation a suspected hardcore bandit identified as Musa Katela alias Ferrali (36) for allegedly possessing a gun and his involvement in separate armed robbery in the city.

Mr Sirro reported that the suspect was allegedly found in possession of a Browning pistol, two magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition. The suspect was also found in possession of a ‘Noah’ motor vehicle with registration number T 660 DDR.

“In the preliminary investigations, the suspect confessed his involvement in various armed robberies with his colleagues. Investigations are underway to establish the identity of the entire network of criminals collaborating with the suspect and they will appear to the court of law as soon as investigation completed,” Mr Sirro said.


In the separate incident, police have seized 20 rounds of ammunition for a military weapon known as G3 at a football pitch in Chamazi- Mbagala area in Temeke Municipality.
