TRA extends time for TIN verification yet again

THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has extended time for verification of the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) information to February 14
Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, TRA Director for Taxpayer Services Richard Kayombo said the move was aimed at providing more time for those who did not complete the exercise to do so.
He said taxpayers who did not complete the verification process should first visit TRA regional offices for completion of the exercise.
He said before visiting the regional offices the TIN verifier should pay customs excise for all imported goods, update their driving license, pay annual car fees and have tax clearance certificates.
He assured those living abroad that they will verify their TIN when they come back home after showing all detailed valid information.
Kayombo further revealed that after completing of the verification exercise in Dar es Salaam, TRA would start the exercise in other eight regions from February 15 to 31, this year.
He mentioned the regions as Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, Tanga and Coast.
According to Kayombo, people with more than one TIN will be required to produce them for verification, whereby one will be removed from the system.
On September 16, last year, the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) introduced the requirement that all taxpayers registered with the Authority immediately verify their Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN).
The measure was intended to assist TRA efforts in ensuring the process of installing new and modern technology to make the taxpayers’ recordkeeping system more effective.
All taxpayers were to receive a new TIN certificate. Failure to register will lead to revocation of the taxpayer’s TIN certificate.
Verification was to be undertaken in phases. The first phase was to run from August 15, 2016 to October 15, 2016 for Dar es Salaam tax regions.
The verification process was done by the taxpayer physically visiting the respective TRA offices for the purpose of verifying their fingerprints as reflected in TRA’s system and submitting a completed TRA verification form.
