HIV/AIDS infection rate on the rise in Rukwa Region, statistics show

STATISTICS show that the rate of HIV/ AIDS infections in Rukwa Region has risen from 4.9 per cent in 2009 rate to 6.2 to date. Rukwa Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Zelothe Steven said the situation was worrisome, a situation that calls for increased efforts in dealing with the problems.

Mr Steven made the remarks when addressing members of the 30th Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) in this municipality over the weekend.M“The situation is worse and more efforts are needed to address the situation.

I’m told the figures are high despite the male circumcision campaign,” said the RC. According to the latest statistics, the situation in the region is worse in Sumbawanga Municipality, whose prevalent rate stands at 6.5 per cent while prevalence rate in Nkasi District has only 3.1 per cent.

The chilling information was revealed by Rukwa Regional Medical Officer, Dr John Gurisha, who said the prevalence was worsening in the region.

“Even though the national HIV/ Aids prevalence rate has dropped to 5.7 per cent, in reality the situation is worse in Rukwa Region as prevalence rate stands at 6.2 per cent, up from 4.9 per cent in 2009/10,” stated the RMO.

Meanwhile, about 39,939 young men have undergone circumcision in the region after being educated on the importance of the male cut in protecting them from contracting HIV infection.
The exercise was carried out in Rukwa Region between 2015 and 2016. Dr Gurisha told the “Daily News” on the sidelines of the RCC meeting that during the period, the region had projected to circumcise 32,084 males and until June 30, about 39,939 men had been circumcised, equivalent to 124 per cent. The RMO further revealed that the exercise was made possible by a development partner, Walter Reed Programme (WRP).

Meanwhile, Mr Kilonzo said that 49.1 per cent of people living with HIV/Aids are getting ARVs drugs in the region.
