Dodoma water payment defaulters face PM ire

THE Prime Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa, has directed the Dodoma Urban Water Supply and Sewage Authority (DUWASA) to hand over to him a list of public institutions that owe the latter as unpaid bills amounted to a staggering 1.4bn/-.

A statement issued by his office said the prime minister issued the directive yesterday when addressing DUWASA staff after he had evaluated performance of the Mzakwe water source located on the outskirts of Dodoma.

He is in the region for twoday visit aimed at evaluating the ongoing preparations for the government to Dodoma from Dar es Salaam. “Bring to me the list of the government institutions that haven’t paid their bills.

All debts must be paid,” he directed. He told the DUWASA staff to ensure that they improved water accessibility, particularly at surveyed land, so that residents and investors buy plots where the utility is available.

“We have invited the investors; I want them build industries and hotels here in Dodoma. So, if they come and find that water and electricity are available, this would be catalyst for speed construction,” he said.

He further directed the Dodoma District Commissioner, Mr Christina Mndeme, to ensure that people do not reside at the area near the Mzakwe water source. “Burning of natural plantations has destructed several water sources in the country. It’s a big problem, which should be ended,” he observed.

The Executive Director of DUWASA, Engineer David Pallangyo, earlier informed Mr Majaliwa that some residents have started building houses and conduct social activities near the water source despite being earlier evacuated.

Regarding defaulters, Eng Pallangyo noted that public entities were leading in failure to settle bills. “There are ordinary citizens who owe the authority, but their debts are not huge and we can handle them,” he said, noting that one of major challenges they were facing was the tendency of burning forest.
