'POLICE DESTROY 210 KG OF MARIJUANA, BURN 31 HECTARES'

Arusha Regional Police Commander Charles Mkumbo said yesterday that the two day joint operation involved the police and a special anti-narcotics unit, raiding Engalon and Kisimiri villages in Arumeru district.
During the raid, the two units were also able to impound 58 sacks of narcotics and then set them ablaze.
“We will not relent in our quest of restoring sanity in those areas. We will always be on the lookout and such operations will be regular,” the RPC declared.
The operation also saw seeds of the weed being uprooted, while another 31 hectares of marijuana planted in the area was burnt down.
Mkumbo warned local officials against conniving with farmers in setting up such plantations in the district which has become notorious for growing marijuana.
Mid last year, the police seized and destroyed 26 tons of marijuana in a similar operation thought to be the biggest seizure of illicit drugs in recent years countrywide.
In 2010, seizures of cannabis in Tanzania amounted to 279.5 metric tons accounting for 4 per cent of the global total—and were the third largest by country after Mexico (2,313 metric tons) and the United States (1,931 metric tons).
Arusha region is a key marijuana producing area, while the crop is also substantially cultivated in Morogoro, Iringa, Tabora, Mara, Rukwa, Ruvuma and Tanga.
Most marijuana grown in the country is sold in clandestine urban networks locally and in neighboring states of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
A certain version of narcotics data indicates that Tanzania ranks fourth globally as a producer of dried marijuana as well as producing significant quantities of khat, but this is far from certain

'Pull up your socks, Mbarawa tells Swissport'
Prof Mbarawa was speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday while making a tour to see the damage caused by fire at the airport Terminal II that destroyed customers’ goods whose value will take time to properly establish.
“Luckily, the fire did not cause harm to people at the airport, though a number of properties were destroyed,” the minister said.
The fire accident occurred on Thursday night at around 23hrs in the luggage room manned by Swissport.
The minister said the government has formed a twelve-member committee to investigate the cause of the fire to come up with a scientific outcome within a month.
Passengers using the airport need not to worry as the incident had not disrupted operations at the terminal, he pointed out.
The airport temporarily switched ground goods handling services to Terminal One but had resumed operations at Terminal II as of yesterday, he said.
Swissport ought to ensure that it expands its operations and meet customers’ needs, the minister said, citing appeals by customers that Swissport improve their operations and to reach more customers.
“The government encourages other companies with interest to venture into the business to do so in order to increase competition in cargo handling business at the airport,” he said.
NAS-Dar Airco Co. Ltd had expressed interest in airport handling, he said, noting that there was need for competition so that cargo can be handled smoothly and quickly at the airport.
The newly registered firm NAS-Dar Airco ought to start operations with speed, he said, noting that the government was now out to ensure that investors in various sectors of economy come in large numbers to invest in the country. “Anyone found to delay such investments would be put to task,” the minister intoned.
“We need as government to ensure that people invest in our country and that there are no hindrances to such investments,” he emphasized.
Swissport Tanzania Executive Director Mrisho Yassin said the company would issue a statement regarding its operations.
The Julius Nyerere International Airport is the largest in the country, located 12 kilometres southwest of the city centre and hosts flights to destinations in Africa
