PRIME Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa, has instructed the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training to come up with a strong strategy that will help to increase the number of health workers in the country.
He said with strong strategies, the
government will manage to train its experts in the country instead of
training them abroad. The premier was speaking after inspecting the
construction of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences
(MUHAS) at Mlonganzila campus. He said the previous governments managed
to train health experts who are currently serving Tanzanians in various
regions.
Premier Majaliwa said the completion of
Mlongazila project will enable Tanzanians to get quality and reliable
health services. “Upon completion of this project, it is obvious that
many Tanzanians will no longer travel to India and other countries for
treatment,” he said.
Meanwhile, the premier ordered Ubungo
District Commissioner (DC), Mr Humphrey Polepole, to arrest all people
who are accused of stealing 1,000 litres of oil from the contractor who
is constructing Mlonganzila campus.
“I have been informed on the theft of
1,000 litres of oil from the contractor’s garage. How can this happen?
All suspects must be arrested,” he insisted.
The Minister for Education, Science,
Technology and Vocational Training, Prof Joyce Ndalichako, said the
completion of Mlonganzila campus will increase the number of specialist
doctors in the country.
She said Tanzanians will no longer
travel abroad for treatment because there will be enough local
specialist doctors in the country. Earlier, MUHAS Vice-Chancellor, Prof
Ephata Kaaya, said the completion of Mlonganzila campus will improve
health services in the country.
According to him, the hospital will be
the best. It will also curb the shortage of health experts in the
country and provide employment for the youth.
The project has cost 61 million US
dollars. The government of Tanzania contributed 18 million dollars and
the remaining amount of 43 million dollars has been obtained in the form
of a soft loan from the government of Korea.
Prof Kaaya said the completion of the project will increase the enrolment of students from 4,010 to 15,000 annually.
