Wami Bridge to undergo expansion

WAMI bridge, a major connection to northern regions, is up for expansion to cope with increasing needs, the National Assembly was informed.

Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Eng Edwin Ngonyani, said a feasibility study and architectural designs are complete whereas reports have been handed over to the responsible authorities for review.

He gave the explanation when answering a basic question from Mussa Mbarouk (Tanga Urban-CUF), who wanted to know when the bridge will be expanded as it has been a cause of most accidents that have claimed lives and loss of property.

Mbarouk wanted the government commitment as well as to when exactly will the new Wami Bridge be constructed, taking into consideration it is the main economic link between Dar es Salaam and the northern regions.

Responding, Ngonyani said it was true that Wami Bridge is among the long-serving links whose construction design was for a single lane.

“I agree with Mbarouk that Wami Bridge is a single lane which cannot hold with the increasing needs and especially a big number of trucks using the bridge thus at times creating congestion,” he said.

He said knowing the importance of the bridge for economic and social activities; the government is intending to build a new one to meet the increasing number of vehicles using the link. So far, he said, the feasibility study report is out it awaits the approval of the final report so that the government can start soliciting funds for the construction of the new bridge.
